An Entity Tag (ETag) is a special HTTP header utilized for validating web caches and handling conditional requests. It serves as a distinctive identifier assigned to a particular version of a resource, such as a webpage or file. The ETag enables the client and server to assess whether the resource has undergone changes since the previous request, facilitating efficient caching and minimizing unnecessary data transfers. For example –
ETag: “686897696a7c876b7e”
the ETag value is a string of characters that represents the unique identifier for the associated resource. When a client makes a subsequent request for the resource, it can include the ETag in the request header. If the resource has not changed (based on the ETag), the server can respond with a “304 Not Modified” status, indicating that the client’s cached version is still valid.
